Basic Operation

SIM Card Installation
The Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card helps your wireless network identify and communicate with your phone. It is also used for storing messages and phone numbers. You cannot use your phone without a SIM card except to dial emergency calls.

To install your SIM card:

1. Turn off the phone’s power and remove the battery (see the Introduction chapter).
2. Open the SIM card holder by sliding it to the open position and lifting.
3. Insert the SIM card. The SIM card fits into its socket only one way, as shown below.
4. Close the SIM card holder by sliding it to the lock position.
5. Reinsert the battery (see the Introduction chapter).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Turning the Phone On
Press and holdfor 1 second. The power-on tone sounds and all icons display for a few seconds.

• If Check SIM! displays, your SIM card is not installed or improperly installed.
• If Incorrect SIM! displays, contact your Service Provider.
• If Unlock Code? displays, auto lock is enabled. Enter your Unlock Code. If you make a mistake, pressand re-enter your Unlock Code. You have 3 attempts to enter the code correctly. On the last attempt, Last Attempt flashes and the phone is locked. If your phone locks, contact your Service Provider to unlock your phone.
• If Enter PIN and Press OK displays, enter your PIN (4-8 digits) and press. For security, the digits display as asterisks. If you enter a digit incorrectly, press, and start over.
  If you enter an incorrect PIN, Wrong PIN Enter Again! displays. You have 3 attempts to enter the PIN correctly. On the last attempt, Last Attempt flashes and the phone is locked. If your phone locks, contact your Service Provider to unlock your phone.
• If No Service Currently Available displays your phone cannot connect to a PCS network (see Troubleshooting chapter for more information).

Network Selection
We strongly recommend that you select automatic network selection although your phone can also select networks manually. See “Network Selection” in the Main Menu chapter for more information.

Automatic Network Search
When your phone is turned on, Searching displays. When your phone finds a network, the network name and Receiving Signal Strength Indicator icondisplays. Your phone is now ready to use.
When you are outside of your home network range and there is another network available, the Rm (Roaming Indicator) icon displays.
If you are outside of any PCS network, No Service Currently Available displays.

Manual Network Search

Placing Calls

1. Dial the desired number and pressto send the call.
   Note: Thebutton deletes any misdialed numbers.
2. After you press, Dialing and the number you dialed display.
   If the called party is busy, a normal busy tone sounds and Busy displays.
• If the call is restricted, Call Restricted displays.
• If the call does not connect the first time, and Auto Retry is on, the phone retries the call.
• If the Auto Retry function is not on, Call Failed! Try Again? displays. Select Yes to retry the call. After a call connects, the Call Timer displays. After 1 hour, the Call Timer display format changes from minutes and seconds to hours and minutes.
1. When the call is complete, pressbriefly to hang up.

Emergency Calls
You can place emergency calls at any time by dialing one of the emergency numbers (911, 999, or 112) and pressing.

Note: Only emergency calls can be placed when SIM cards are not inserted in phones.

International Calls
To place international calls, presstwice in quick succession (+, the international access code, displays) and dial the remaining digits.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Answering Calls
When you receive a call, the phone rings, the backlight illuminates, and Call or Forwarded Call displays.

• To answer the call, press any key exceptand 0.
• To reject the call, press, or press 0 followed by.

The caller’s number (if available) displays. If you have this number in memory, the person’s name displays.
If you do not answer a call, Unanswered Calls and the number of unanswered calls display. The phone stores up to 10 unanswered calls. View the phone numbers using Unanswered Calls in the Memory Menu.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Handset Speaker Volume
To adjust the voice volume during conversation either:

• Press Right on the Express Key, scroll to Voice Vol. and press. Adjust volume using Right and Left on the Express Key. Pressto accept the new volume orto leave the volume unchanged.
• Press Up on the Express Key to increase the volume and press Down to decrease the volume.
  Note: When multi-party call is active, the Up and Down key selects a multi-party member. See “Multi-Party Conferencing” in the Main Menu chapter for more details.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Interrupted Calls
When a call is interrupted due to loss of the signal, the phone may try to reconnect the call. When the phone tries to reconnect the call, Reconnecting displays.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Power Off
To turn off your phone, press and holdfor 1 second. A power off tone sounds and Power Off displays. Do not disconnect the battery while this message displays. The phone saves information to the SIM card.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Entering Alphanumeric Characters
Theicon and Enter Text display when you can enter text from the keypad (e.g., to store numbers and names, or to write or modify text messages).

• To enter a character, press the corresponding key until the desired character is displayed. (All the characters available for that key appear at the bottom of the display.) Wait for the cursor to move to the next position before entering the next character or press Right on the Express Key.
• To delete one character, press.
• To delete all text, holdfor over 1 second. Delete Text? displays. Select Delete Text?, select Yes, and pressto confirm.
• To relocate the cursor in the text during text editing, you can use the Express Key.
• To end text entry, press.

Press and hold key to switch between lower and uppercase. For example, to enter the letter L, press thekey 3 times in quick succession.

Note: The keyis also used to make international calls and to insert a pause. To make international calls, see “Placing Calls” in the Introduction chapter. To insert a pause, hold thefor 2 seconds until theturns into a P.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Voice Mail
Your phone can receive voice mail from unanswered calls. If you have new Voice Mail, theicon appears and Voice Msg. displays. See “Voice Mail” in the Main Menu chapter for more information.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Text Messages (Short Message Service)
You can use your phone to send and receive text messages. If you have unretrieved messages, theicon appears and the number of messages displays, followed by Text. If SIM memory for Text Messages is full, theicon flashes. See “Messages” in the Main Menu chapter for details on how to read, write and send messages.
